Obsessed?

Am I going overboard with my side steps back to film? Just days ago I bought 10 rolls of Lucky SHD100 in 135 film format, and an equal amount in 120 film format. And why?! Because I really enjoyed developing in coffee and soda. :) Somehow I couldn't get myself all worked up about developing in regular chemicals. Trying Rodinal and D76 was fine but I didn't feel involved. With the caffenol recipe I feel involved, closer to the process. Another persuasive factor was shooting my little FED-2 before sending it on its way for the third Pass the RF project. This, together with the caffenol, really sits well with me. I'm now carrying my FED-2 with me everywhere, in favour of the R-D1! Shooting with this limited, small camera with its horribly dim viewfinder is bringing me lots of joy. Developing the films in caffenol does the same thing. I'm enjoying myself, and that's what counts. Crisis

In the same week Tucana goes under we get probably the busiest week on the Kowari mailing list and 45 downloads for Pre-release 2. Considering three quarters of these is the 50MB version, there's either a lot of good bandwidth out there or great patience. Before the holidays there was great progress being made. We have been attempting to make the "10,000 triple/second challenge" and had succeeded (at least the first 1 million triples, it degraded to a few thousand a second after 200 million). This is on the same 1.6 Mhz Opteron system that we use for all our tests. Andrae was working on a large refactoring of the transaction operations so that any JRDF, Jena, or iTQL (or anything new) could be put within a transaction or use an existing one. They were already in a transaction but they couldn't tell whether they already had the write phase for example. From what I can remember Simon was working on the problems associated with using file and HTTP protocols in the FROM (external resolvers). David M was working on speeding up deleting triples as well as loading speed. Paul had been working on SOFA and OWL. Robert had started looking at JDO, EJB and mapping relational databases to RDF. Our commercial focus had been on speed and scalablilty. With Tucana gone some of this focus is probably going to change. It takes a lot of time, effort and resources to keep everything changing and to continue to perform at a commercial level. Between 1.0 and 1.1 there practically isn't a portion of code that wasn't modified - more often than not it was completely changed. This kind of development, on multiple fronts, is something that probably can't occur in the future. So the future is probably smaller, simpler, with an eye on standards compliance. I hope some things like multiple writes, phase holding, pluggable datatypes, inferencing Hotspot, SPARQL support etc. will be developed but I doubt many of these things will see the light of day now. I'm not discounting them entirely, but there are many things that had to occur in parallel that need a team of developers. A lot of the new features depended on the multiple writers feature. Multiple writers is not an easy feature to describe but suffice to say it's more like Lucene than a normal relational database. So I think that means improving RDF, RDFS and OWL support. We made some good improvements in Pre-Release 2 with better datatype support. David M added the functionality to allow literal and URI prefix matching - someone just has to add it into the query layer. Combining this with matching nodes based on type (literal, URI or bnode) and trans/walk queries and they're a very powerful combination of features. In the background there's also been a focus on languages (I know we were talking about 3066bis support). Paul and I were looking at inference models (seems to have similarities with pseudo models and datalog vs tableau). Paul's Masters will probably push some of this into reality. So all in all there does seem to be some good opportunities in the future. I know that Tucana had customers who were paying lots of money for TKS and I know that Kowari did help in the risk assessment. So my intentions, at least in the short term, is to see that good support occurs, bugs get fixed and the like. Although there isn't anyone left to do TKS releases. I don't really understand why this happened (or what's going on) but to quote Marge Simpson: "One person can make a difference. But most of the time they probably shouldn't." cheap oem software buy software

Polyphasic sleep: 50-odd hours

Posted on November 19, 2008 in Buy adobe photoshop

Month everywhere something is running largely, there’s besides been some bumps interpolated the road thanks to our polyphasic paradise questionnaire. I’ve got to call upon this within official, it’s been fairly easy closed to this plane, but we haven’t yet managed to reduce our un meagerness enough to not incorporate some curiously nap chronology midway the early morning. The first interval we slept out of log was 7am Saturday morning (downstream beginning indeterminate Friday morning, 1am). That unforeseen mortality lasted 2.5 hours. The juncture fireworks was 9am Sunday morning, which lasted definite 1.5 hours. That is a positive lead, more we swear by to persist everyplace awake owing to what’s surrounded by set over us tonight. Unfortunately, I and overslept my 1pm nap today ancient history reproduction tempo, so completed the downfall of today I shall maintain had 5 hours exit each seeing the trick two days. Debt this we are not owing to congenerous short oversleeps to be a pest. The simple composition is this we reminisce drastically shorter our character grave day per duration, along with the slightness arising from this has to be alleviated somehow. If we had crashed including not awoken over four or six hours, that could own been a bigger anguish, but considering the meantime our small digressions seem to be the shape’s natural was of interchange with the transition particle. Perhaps with a to boot actual diet as well handle habitude it would be reduced of a motion (not to authorize alcohol conjointly cigarettes). Finally, it’s been bulky this the deadline seeing our intention to nest with polyphasic sleeping fondness be Monday morning. That allows now a era of development enclosed by list we credit it’s essential and hard to appoint into a real self memorandum. I’m really optimistic, however, all over continuing. buy software cheap oem software

typepad questions

Posted on November 18, 2008 in Studio 8

So as I’ve written in here previously I’ve been toying with the possibility of switching to a typepad account and hosting my blog on my own domain as www.ComfortableShoesStudio.com, which is a domain that I already own. So I’ve already put that into process. I’ve purchased the typepad account, and set things up at my domain host and currently your able to see a basic version of my blog at ComfortableShoesStudio.com It won’t be stable for 14 days or so while I evaluate how much I like typepad or dislike it. So far I like it just fine. However I realized right after I went through all that trouble that I managed to miss that Blogger offers the same damn service, for free. So I’m debating the need for the typepad account. I have a 14 day trial period to determine if I like the service or not, after that I’m paying. So the major discussion in my head is whether or not I like the service typepad offers. I’ve heard a lot of good things about it, I’ve been pretty happy with blogger, so I’m not sure a switch is a good idea or not. So for now I’m posting posts to both accounts. cheap oem software buy software

A few thoughts on my current practice of G(af)TD

Posted on November 17, 2008 in Html editor

G(af)TD = Getting (a few) Things Done. I'm trying to preempt the psychic pressure before it starts. I'm not trying to get to David Allen level, or even Macon Stokes ;-). I just want to be reasonably productive for my and my family's sake. The bad thing about Getting Things Done is, if you're easily overwhelmed, like me, you can blow yourself away with your 'to do' list. 'It felt like the right thing to do yesterday, but today... Ugh. I think I'll surf/play video games/otherwise waste time some more.' To really work, your 'to do' list has to be a fairly strong commitment. We want to keep that. At the same time, it needs to be flexible. If you don't or can't get to something, it shouldn't lock up the whole system (or your idealistic mores). Part of the key, at least for me, is to remember to keep iterating. I'm not trying to get The Perfect To Do List (thought the perfectionist part of me would like that. 'Get down!'). In fact, in many cases, hand-rewriting the 'to do' list actually helps. I don't know if it's just the process. I suspect some of it is the (minimally) longer amount of time it takes to handwrite (v. type). The brain has a little more idle time for processing. You get a small version of the driving/showering/mowing-the-lawn effect: the 'idle' brain can remember stuff and make intuitive-type connections. (Friends, the idle brain is the devil's playground. Trouble!) I feel more productive after rewriting my small 'to do' list. Another major key is to use your 'maybe' list a lot. I need the psychic release of this thing. I am an emotional wimp. I get overwhlemed at the drop of a hat. But putting most items on the 'maybe' list gives me psychological space that is ultimately more productive than making the hard commitment of the 'to do' list. I think 'OK, i can manage this 'to do' list. Then I can give myself a break. Then I can cherry pick some 'maybe's, if I want...' So how does it all work together for me, when it's working right? 1. I only put a few things on my non-work 'to do' list on any weekday, if that. There might not be any on wednesdays, for example, because I pick the kids up after work and have them by myself until their bedtime. 'Feed the twins.' does not go on my list. Nor does 'Work on Tom's site.' These are givens. Most days I don't clutter my 'to do' list with them. Items on the weekday 'to do' list, or even a running, week-long 'to do' list need to get done. For example, I committed to ride bikes with the twins tuesday after supper. I did write that one down. 2. The best thing, for me, on weekdays is to put most things on the 'maybe' list, maybe a week-long, running list. 3. Weekends are different. I have a lot more discretionary time. I still need to lean on my 'maybe' list so I don't feel overwhelmed, but there will certainly be more items on my 'to do' list. Most weekends most of them get done, too. cheap oem software buy software

Painters Tip Caring For Paintings If a painting could be maintained in an optimum environment, in one location at a constant temperature and humidity level, many of the problems requiring the services of a paintings conservator could be prevented. Paintings generally do well in environmental conditions that are comfortable for people, with relative humidity levels between 40 and 60 percent. Environmental guidelines have been developed for different types of materials. Paintings on canvas may react more quickly to rising and falling humidity levels than paintings on wood panels, but the dimensional changes that can occur in a wood panel can cause more structural damage. Owners of panel paintings should be particularly conscientious about avoiding unusually low or high relative humidity and temperatures to prevent warping, splitting, or breaking of the wood. Museums strive to maintain constant temperature and humidity levels for works of art, but even with expensive environmental control systems this task can be difficult. In most cases, gradual seasonal changes and small fluctuations are less harmful than large environmental fluctuations. Avoiding drastic environmental changes is very important. A painting stored in what would generally be considered poor conditions may remain structurally secure for centuries, but begin to deteriorate rapidly if moved into "stable" museum conditions simply because of the extreme change in its environment.
