By knocking off the Windows Firewall, a criminal could open the door to new types of attacks, but a number of factors make such an attack scenario unlikely, Reguly said. For example, the attacker would have to be within the LAN in order to make the attack work, and of course it would work only on systems using ICS, which is disabled by default. Furthermore, the attack would have no effect on any third-party firewall being used by the PC, Reguly said. Users can avoid the attack by disabling ICS, Reguly said. But this will also kill the shared Internet connection. An easier solution may be for ICS users to simply move their networks onto a router or network address translation device, said Stefano Zanero, chief technology officer with Secure Network SRL. "They are so cheap right now, and in many cases they offer better protection and an easier administration of your LAN," he said via instant message. Windows XP appears to be the only platform affected by this attack, which has not been successfully reproduced on Windows Server 2003, Reguly said. I like Windows XP. In my experience it is reliable, fairly robust, secure (if patched as necessary), and generally easy to use (once you loose the new interface). I use XP on 3 machines at home at 2 at work. No problems that I can blame on Microsoft. Lots of little irrations but nothing that compares to what I've 'enjoyed' with using Linux. Service Pack 2 (sp2) is the latest 'patch' from the nice people in Redmond. 266MB of new applications. I installed it the first day I could on a VMWare machine and had no problems. (For those who don't know - VMWare is the tool to use for testing) I then installed it on a couple of desktops at home and then my desktop at work, laptop at home, and then finally a old laptop at work. No problems. So a coworker stops by my office and asks a question about a machine he is building for his daughter to take to school with her. Based on a Shuttle box it was a new Prescott P4 with a Intel 865 chipset. Since he had installed XP Pro I advised him to install sp2 just to stay ahead of the curve. Well he isn't talking to me... What happened? sp2 installed without complaint, rebooted, and nothing. Zip, zero, nothing. No safe mode nothing. Well the coworker was smart enough to have Ghosted the machine to DVD and restored it so his daughter could take it to school. The coworker did some research and discovered that there appears to be a problem with Prescott core P4 and Celeron chips when coupled with the 865/875 chipsets. And coworker talks to me again :-). So Thing1 gets to college last Friday. Plugs the XP machine into the network spigot and gets nothing. No DHCP response at all. Bummer - need to register the MAC address. I'm really enjoying shooting with my FED-2 and the collapsible Industar-50 50/3.5. Loaded with some Efke KB100 or, better yet, some Lucky film, I'm really getting a buzz. The odd thing is that shooting the FED-2 makes me think of shooting my Leica M2 again. The FED-2 is a nice little camera; one of the reasons why I love to shoot it. But the FED-2 also has a few drawbacks. One is the teeny and dim viewfinder and the even tinier and low contrast patch. This makes focusing a bit of a guess in many situations. Another little niggle is the lack of long and short shutter speeds. Shutter speeds run from 1/500 sec to 1/25 sec. The FED-2 does have a "B" setting but that's usually only useful when the camera is on a tripod. The FED-2 does have a few pros over the M2. One such benefit is the build-in diopter. Another (huge) pro is the easy loading of the FED-2. I can't tell you how much of a relieve it is to just be able to slap in the film. :) One more advantage is the equally sturdy build yet lower weight of the FED-2 compared to the M2. So, I'm in doubt. Shall I whip out the M2 again and start shooting that, or shall I stay with the FED-2 and "suffer" the dim viewfinder and lack of slow shutter speeds? One deciding factor could be that my daughter doesn't want the M2 to loose its fabulous Japanesque Gold cover. For me to start shooting the M2 again would mean to recover it with the black leatherette cover I have. The "Golden Dragon" is just a teensy bit too conspicuous. :p And that makes me secretly think about getting another Leica M or, perhaps to stay in tune with the FED-2, a Leica III.
