Not sure what to blog about

I'm not sure what to blog about, so I'm going to ramble. This isn't necessarily out of the ordinary, right? First of all, I've been thinking about some positive qualities I'd like to develop related to a quote in that Maryknoll magazine I mentioned for Independence Day about different ways of looking at people. Basically, the story was about a missionary priest of a village feeling obligated to do something to punish a parish member who had divorced or otherwise cheated on his wife for another woman. The rest of the community, although in no way approving of the unfaithfulness of the man, felt little inclination to ostracizing or otherwise punish "the adulterer". The priest learned that his parish members took a holistic view of the man, weighing his contributions to society over his personal shortcomings and spiritual crimes, while he himself was fixated on the negative. WWJD? Obviously, it depends on circumstances and consequences. My take on this is more general. While pessimism is a terrible philosophy in general, optimism isn't necessarily the cure. The priests parish members didn't necessarily try to just look for the good in a person, so much as looking at the whole picture. To do that, one should merely control their emotions. If something about someone really bothers me, I tend to get fixated on it and allow it to irrationally dominate my impressions of him/her, masking positive qualities. And, having heard the Dalai Lama talk last Sunday, emotion, be it love or hatred (yes, strong word) cripples reason. FED-2, or Leica after all...?

I'm really enjoying shooting with my FED-2 and the collapsible Industar-50 50/3.5. Loaded with some Efke KB100 or, better yet, some Lucky film, I'm really getting a buzz. The odd thing is that shooting the FED-2 makes me think of shooting my Leica M2 again. The FED-2 is a nice little camera; one of the reasons why I love to shoot it. But the FED-2 also has a few drawbacks. One is the teeny and dim viewfinder and the even tinier and low contrast patch. This makes focusing a bit of a guess in many situations. Another little niggle is the lack of long and short shutter speeds. Shutter speeds run from 1/500 sec to 1/25 sec. The FED-2 does have a "B" setting but that's usually only useful when the camera is on a tripod. The FED-2 does have a few pros over the M2. One such benefit is the build-in diopter. Another (huge) pro is the easy loading of the FED-2. I can't tell you how much of a relieve it is to just be able to slap in the film. :) One more advantage is the equally sturdy build yet lower weight of the FED-2 compared to the M2. So, I'm in doubt. Shall I whip out the M2 again and start shooting that, or shall I stay with the FED-2 and "suffer" the dim viewfinder and lack of slow shutter speeds? One deciding factor could be that my daughter doesn't want the M2 to loose its fabulous Japanesque Gold cover. For me to start shooting the M2 again would mean to recover it with the black leatherette cover I have. The "Golden Dragon" is just a teensy bit too conspicuous. :p And that makes me secretly think about getting another Leica M or, perhaps to stay in tune with the FED-2, a Leica III. So, I was assigned to do a profile feature on a well-known public figure of our group choice (I'm doing it with another 4 students). At first we thought we could do something different by interviewing a theatre activist - Faridah Merican, but due to some difficulties we had to opt to another "artiste". Shan and I went to this old man's office with high regard and respect for him, but when we walked out of that place, our perception changed completely. He talked about everything under the sun - syok sendiri! We asked different question, and he answered something else. And when it comes to politics, he's an angry man. But, I think that would be something normal lah when interviewing an old "wise" man who had contributed a lot to the country and society. When I've finished asking questions, I realised that he's also a "player" , prententious and fake - he told me that "this one particular sports in Malaysia is not business-like, we emphasizes the art instead of the money coming from those who are interested in learning it, unlike America and the Europe." Yeah, rite! The thing that made me even more pening was when I took his picture, boo-hoo so lansi lah, with all the trophies and awards. his office is like a museum. But the one thing that irritated me and Shan was when we took our photo with him, he pulled us by our waist to get closer to him and said "hehe, I'm sandwiched by two pretty girls". Yuks, tolong lah, he's quite fortunate that I didn't kick his b*lls! So hamsap you know, and he kept on hinting to us that he got this girlfriend lah, although he has already has a wife, and we were told by sumber2 yang boleh dipercayai he has married three times and has two wives!! Duh, in his webbie he mentioned only ONE! Reminds me of Mr.Tang's Girls. How could lah such respectable and well-known person do that to two "strangers" , ain't he afraid of us telling the whole world about that? But, then again, he's the one with power and authority, do you think the world is gonna believe us...I dunno, but in case you met such person, just ajar him and kick his you-know-what. Because of my respect towards him and my cikgu, I didn't do so, aiyah, so rugilah, but I wonder would I be able to do that since he's the so-called great "artiste" . "A Moment in Time" © David A. Ziser I made this image a few years ago, but it still remains a favorite as I really enjoy the feelings in it. The photograph captures the bride and groom just as they begin their first bridal dance as husband and wife. The dance floor was illuminated with special lighting features and I wanted to capture the couple as they moved through the unique design and illumination.
